Bloom Where You’re Planted

Hello all and happy Monday!!!

I’m back today with a little tutorial featuring a couple of the recently released Tim Holtz Chapter 2 Thinlet Dies, Alphanumeric Label and Crochet.

It’s so fun to mix the new dies with the old ones…the older ones I used were Funky Florals #2, Funky Florals #3 and Tiny Houses, they all work perfectly together!

I love this project and how it’s all contained within a distressed Trinket Tin! First, I’ll show you how I distressed the tin and then I’ll show you the steps to create the tiny vignette inside.

This is not my first go at distressing a Trinket Tin, but I thought I’d break the steps down for you. These little tins can become slightly addictive.

In fact, for Creativation this year I created a couple projects with them…

ok, maybe it was more than a couple…ok, it was 7!

WHAT??? ….oh my goodness, yes, SEVEN!!!

So, yes, I was apparently very inspired and having my own little Trinket Tin Extravaganza!!!

So be sure to give them a try and see what you can dream up and create in them… 😉

Let’s begin…

Distressing a Trinket Tin…

I started out by tapping the tin with a hammer, both inside and out, to give the tin some dents and dings.

Then I scratched it up a bit with my Sanding Grip and lightly painted some areas with a wash of Dina Wakley White Gesso and water. This is an important step and one that can’t be skipped. The trinket tins are smooth metal so they need “tooth” to grasp the Opaque Crackle Texture Paste.

With my finger I applied some Opaque Crackle Texture Paste.

I applied the paste around the edges, inside, outside and onto the front and back of the tin very randomly. After it was crackled I applied some Peeled Paint and Cracked Pistachio Distress Paint to the crackled areas.

This gives the tin a very vintage and well worn look.

I blended Walnut Stain Distress Crayon and Mushroom Alcohol Ink into the cracks.

If you notice any areas that are flaking off you can apply a tiny bit of Distress Collage Matte Medium with you finger to hold the flakes in place.

With that, the yummy crackly chippy goodness was complete…now on to the inside. 🙂

The house…

I cut two of the small houses from the Tiny Houses Bigz die. They were both cut from Distress Watercolor Paper and stamped with a variety of the flowers from the Flower Jar Stamp Set (CMS297) with Ground Expresso Archival Ink.

I blended both pieces of the house with Weathered Wood and Shabby Shutters Distress Oxides and Frayed Burlap Distress Ink. Spritzed them with a bit of water, dabbed with a towel and dried them with my heat tool. I trimmed off approximately 1/4″ off both the sides and bottoms of the house pieces. This was done so that once the house was glued together, it would fit within the tin.

I cut a piece of Distress Watercolor Paper to create the roof of my house with the Tiny Houses Bigz Die. This piece was blended with Vintage Photo and Walnut Stain Distress Inks.

I cut another piece of watercolor paper with one of the new Crochet trim and blended the piece with Opaque Crackle Texture Paste, set it aside to dry and crackle, then blended it with Walnut Stain and Weathered Wood Distress Oxides. This piece was then folded to create an overhang on the roof of the house.

I rubbed a small amount of crackle texture paste onto the house, let it dry and crackle then rubbed a tiny bit of Cracked Pistachio and Peeled Paint Distress Paint onto the crackled areas.

All the pieces were then adhered together with Distress Collage Matte Medium.

I went digging through my scrap box and found paper to use for the background and to cut flowers, the window, and random bits to cover the inside of my tin. I also used a couple pieces of paper from the new Idea-ology Journal Cards Set plus two envelopes from the new Keepsakes Ephemera Pack on the left side of the tin.

The background behind the house was created from an old piece of notebook paper that were randomly stamped with some Tim Holtz background stamps (Botanical & Batik (CMS327), Ledger Script (CMS241)) with Walnut Stain and Black Soot Distress Ink. Then cut to size to fit at the back of the tin.

I cut the word “BLOOM” (Alphanumeric Label) from a scrap of watercolor paper and adhered the letters onto a scrap of green distress inked paper. I added crackle texture paste to the front of the piece and blended the letters with Peeled Paint and Cracked Pistachio Distress Paint. I added some Mushroom Alcohol Ink into the crackled areas.

I cut some flowers and greens from the Funky Florals #2 & #3 die sets and colored them with Distress Markers.

Then typed out the phrase “where you’re planted” onto a sheet of notebook paper, trimmed it and folded it into a banner.

Then I began arranging all of the parts and pieces within the tin.

The chain to hang the tin…

With a hammer and awl, I punched two holes on both the right and left side of the tin. This is where the chain to hang your tin will be added.

I cut a length of chain from an Assemblage Chain and painted it with Picket Fence Distress Paint. Then also painted two Hex Fasteners. The Hex Fasteners were used to hold the chain into the holes on the tin.

Next, I painted them with a bit of Cracked Pistachio and Peeled Paint Distress Paint.

I connected the Hex Fasteners through the chain and then through the hole on both sides of the tin. With a Picket Fence Distress Crayon, I scribbled into the Typed Token words “happy” and “life” and the “no.365” Story Stick, then attached them to the chain with a few jump rings, and added two vintage keys to the chain.

With that, my trinket tin was complete!

Thank you so much for stopping by today, and be sure to stop back again!

Have a great day!

Creatively yours,

Stacy

I love all the titles Katie has given you…they are so true. When I was working on the Halloween Tombstone, it took me forever to achieve something that even remotely looked like yours. It took me so long that I stopped working on it to start Christmas projects. I have to get back to finish that one so that I can post it to show you. The Halloween project is my favorite all time project of yours. I love them all, but that one tops the list…:D

I am such a huge fan of your work (as you well know by now!) and this little tin has captured my heart! I love the way you pay attention to all the tiny details, the flowers on the house the areas of crackle, the key, the chain, and that banner, they are so wonderfully suited to the piece! Thank you for sharing and continually inspiring me! xx

This pin caught my eye because I have a self-acknowledged obsession with birds, bird houses, and bird cages! lol This project is so adorable! I love it! I am nowhere near this phase of mixed media, but hopefully one day I will be. For now? I enjoy seeing others’ wonderful projects!
