Hello friends!
Only a few more sleeps till Halloween night! Want to make some inky tags before the big day? These are wonderfully easy and yet so satisfying …inky goodness is always the way to go! Tie them to some treat bags filled with yummies and you are set to satisfy the goblins in your life. I filled mine with popcorn, pretzels and m&m’s!
These tags were featured in the Tim Holtz Stampers Anonymous Halloween release that featured some new stamps and stencils. I chose to make several tags using the new mini bats stencil available in the new set MST061 and the moon mask set MSK01, that was released a bit ago. If you follow me regularly then you will know that I used the new Jacks stencil found in the set for my previous tutorial.
Also, you can check out the step by step of how the moon masks are used by clicking here...I shared this tutorial a couple of years ago but it always seems to find a spot in my making from year to year.
I substituted some of the spray inks this time and combined them with various colors of Mica Sprays as I’ll explain the combos as we go. I also have used these masks for Christmas projects too. They are so versatile and perfect for use at any time!
The tags were made using the #5 Mixed Media Tags that Tim Holtz has in his line and the first combo was made using Black Soot Spray Stain plus Ominous Twilight, Jack-O-Lantern and Fortune Teller Mica Stains. I placed the moon stencil on top of a dry tag, then spritzed it with a bit of water, then I spayed on a combination of the Spray Stains and Micas, carefully lifted up the moon mask, then did a spritz of water over the inky background. The water reacts the inks and some of the colors flood into the moon area creating the creepiness! Then I dried it with a heat tool. You can then blend colors using a blending tool or pick up tiny bits of the ink left on your craft mat.
Check out that creepy shimmer created by using the mica stains! I love it!
My next combo consisted of Black Soot & Chipped Sapphire Spray Stains, plus Bubbling Cauldron, Decayed, and Iron Gate Mica Stains.
I LOVE how this one turned out…very northern lights, don’t you think? I decided to keep this one as an example in my own collection of tags because I loved it so much, so if you’re looking and don’t see it tied onto a goodie bag..you know why, LOL!
And once I had a pretty good collection of moon tags (as you can see below).
I applied the bats to the fronts of them by using Distress Black Opaque Texture Paste and the bat layering stencil. While the texture paste was still wet I sprinkled them with some black glitter and left some without.
I stamped some phrases found in the new Framed Frights Stamp Set CMS494, that were stamped using Archival Black Soot ink and some scrap paper that had been inked up with Black Soot Distress Inks and Sprays, they were then trimmed to fit the front of the tags.
I inked some idea-ology mummy cloth and cotton string using water and Black Soot Spray Stain, then dried them using my heat tool. I stitched around all the tags using my sewing machine and black thread then matted the tags to pieces of Black Cardstock. I adhered the phrase using foam tabs.
Then, I filled my goodie bags and tied the bag shut using the mummy cloth and string.
With that, my tags and goodie bags were complete!

So spooky. I gave it a try and it’s amazing how much better the ink reacts on the TH tags than on other cardstock. I cannot for the life of me find my moon mask. So, just a circle had to step in. The inky running accomplished the spooky prayers, etc. Thank you for sharing your magic with us.
