Hello friends! Happy Halloween! Trying to sneak another Halloween tutorial in for you today…this one featuring the new Tim Holtz Halloween idea-ology, mixed with some vintage goodies and some past idea-ology.
It also features some wonderful new glittered plaid cardstock…it especially goes well with some shimmered inky papers that I made by using a variety of sprays that included a couple of new Distress Spritz and a couple of the Halloween Mica Stain Sprays plus Black Texture Paste.
Let’s get to it!
I first started the project by creating several background papers to match the glitter plaid papers in the pack. I prepped some Distress Watercolor paper with Black Texture Paste and a few Tim Holtz Stampers Anonymous Layering Stencils. Then I set the papers aside to dry. After they were dry, I used a few of the Distress Mica Stains that were released for previous Halloween seasons (but are still available ๐ ). They variety I chose included Burning Ember, Iron Gate, Specimen, Decayed and Mulled Cider, the Distress Spritz colors included Spiced Marmalade and Walnut Stain.
I spritzed the paper with water, then a variety of the colors, spritzed it with a bit more water, then dried it with my heat tool. Once the paper was dry, dipped the inky paper into some of the drips that were left on my craft mat. The I dried the paper again. I changed up the color combos with each stenciled pattern to give them a little variety.
See how the colors of the inks go so beautifully with the plaids…makes my heart so happy!
The next combo…Iron Gate, Decayed, Burning Ember and Spritz in Spiced Marmalade.
and the final combo… Decayed, Iron gate, Burning Ember then some Spiced Marmalade and Walnut Stain Spritz.
See how that lovely shimmer gets into the edges of the black texture paste?? YUMMMMM!! Anywho..let’s get going on the next part!
The Etcetera Square Panel-
This was the large one in the pack. It measures approx. 8.25″x8.25″ or so. Using a blending tool and Black Gesso, I rubbed some paint onto the panel on both sides, then set it aside to dry. The blending tool is a super easy and quick way to add paint to a panel, did you know that? Works perfectly every time!
After the panel was dry, I used a blending tool and sanding disk to distress the edges and give it a worn look.
Then, using a blending tool and Vintage Photo Distress Ink, I rubbed some of the distressed edges with some ink…this added a little bit more age. Age is good when it comes to distressing. ๐
Next step, the embroidery hoop and squares…
Using a piece of Ephemera that was found in the 2024 Halloween idea-ology pack, I adhered a piece within the outside edge and adhered it with collage medium. The Embroidery hoop it self measures approx. 5.5″ and is a vintage piece that I found at a large sale or thrift shop..I actually have a whole basket full of them because I LOVE working them into my projects.
In the next photo you’ll see my initial idea before I got to embellishing the hoop. The squares are Etcetera Large Tiles, they measure 2.5″x2.5″ and are a great way to add depth and interest to the Etcetera Panels. They served as the perfect base to add the hoop and display the plaid and inky papers.
I cut 4 plaid squares to fit the etcetera pieces, stitched around them using my sewing machine, then adhered the paper to the etcetera using collage medium. Then once the squares were dry, using a Black Soot Distress Crayon, I scribbled color around the edges of the squares, and rubbed it into the board. This was a quick way to add color to the edges without having to paint them!
Then, I cut squares from the inky papers and adhered them to the squares using collage medium and then again, used the black soot crayon to color the edges.
I then adhered the squares evenly onto the panel using both foam squares and permanent tape. The plaid squares in the four corners were adhered using the foam squares and the inky papers were adhered with the tape.
The foam squares added a little bit of dimension to the project and served as a good place to hold up the embroidery hoop.
I set the panel aside and moved on to designing the hoop…
I colored the paper dolls using Distress Crayons and a q-tip.
After they were colored, I used my sanding disk to scratch them up a little, then rubbed them with vintage photo distress ink.
The moon was from the 2024 Layers and Paperdolls Ephemera Pack. Using a sanding disk, I scratched up the moon a bit then rubbed it with some distress collage medium. I let the collage medium dry a bit but while it was still tacky, I spritzed it with some Fossilized Amber and Unraveled Mica Spray. Then I set it aside to dry. Once dry, it is permanent.
This technique only works when you add the collage medium. The moon is a slick surface and normally wouldn’t hold the color from the spritz of spray.
I began layering all the elements within the hoop. The paper dolls, the moon, some inky mummy cloth that had been dyed using pumice stone spray stain and water.
I found a stick that fit perfectly across the hoop and looked like the perfect spot for the paper dolls to sit on. I added bat wings to the boys. These are from the 2024 Transparencies pack and added some moss. Then I found some metal leaves and branch adornments in my collection. Those were from a couple of years ago but are still available at Simon Says Stamp. They went so perfectly with this project. I just rubbed them with some Distress Crayon to add a little color to them.
I began arranging the mummy cloth and rest of the elements, then began adhering them using collage medium.
The metal branch adornments were stitched to the front of the hoop. I used a needle and thread and wrapped string around the hoop and the stick and tied it off after I felt they were held tight to the hoop. There was absolutely no rhyme or reason to how the stitching/wrapping was done.
I tied a piece of ribbon to the top of the hoop and continued the same technique to apply the rest of the mummy cloth and metal branches by wrapping cotton string around using a needle.
I adhered the moon on the back side of the hoop using a hot glue gun.
I adhered the boys to the front of the hoop by sitting them onto the stick. They were already in a sitting position, so they fit perfectly there.
Using a Black Soot Distress Crayon, I scribbled color into a word plaque then rubbed the color into the plaque using my finger. The plaque was then nailed to the front of the panel below the hoop.
The hoop was adhered to the panel using collage medium, then I set it aside to dry overnight. Once it was dry, I hammered in the large nail at the top of the vignette using a hammer.
With that, my project was complete!
