The Potion Peddler’s Daughter

I hope that you are well! I finally got around to writing this tutorial for the vignette I posted on Instagram the other day… I am deep into the Halloween frame of mind and this little creation has quickly become one of my absolute favorites. It combines several of my favorite Tim Holtz techniques, stamps and products, plus it rests on top of an old oil lamp! All of my favorite things!

 Let’s begin!!

First, I started by creating the inside and outside papers to cover the box and the frame. I blended Black Soot Distress Ink onto a sheet of Watercolor paper then with a palette knife, spread some Ranger Opaque Texture Paste through the new Falling Stars Layering Stencil (THS115). I sprinkled on a bit of Liquid Platinum Embossing Powder while the texture paste was still wet, and set it aside to dry. When it was dry, I embossed it with my heat tool.

 Paper to cover the Collage Frame…

With Black Soot Archival Ink, I stamped the new Ornate and Lace Background Stamps randomly onto a sheet of Watercolor Paper that was large enough to cover the Collage Frame. Then I embossed it with Clear Embossing Powder and began blending a variety of Distress and Oxide inks onto the paper.

 

After my papers were made I started to work on the Vignette Box and Collage Frame.

I lightly painted some Dina Wakley White Gesso on the outside and inside of my Vignette Box… this gives collage medium tooth to grab on to your paper and ultimately helps with the drying time of the glue.

Then I covered the inside edges of my Collage Frame with spiderweb design tape from the new Halloween pack.

I adhered my paper with collage medium and covered the front of the frame. I used a brayer over top of the paper I had glued on, just to make sure I had any bubbles out.  Then with an exacto-knife, carefully trimmed out the center of the frame.

I decided to use the new Idea-ology Metal Gate at the top of the frame. So I placed it where I wanted it, then marked it with a pencil. I then adhered it with some Distress Collage Medium and a piece of design tape.

I used a couple bulldog clips to hold the gate in place while it dried. I kept the design tape holding the gate as I knew that I would be covering the back of the frame with paper.

 I covered the back of the frame with paper from the Halloween Paper Stash. It covered the area where the gate was attached.

With my sanding grip, I sanded and smoothed down all the edges and then with a Ranger Embossing Dauber and Liquid Platinum Embossing Powder, embossed the outside edge of the frame.

I added design tape around the edges of the vignette box and cut paper from the Halloween Paper Stash to fit the inside. All of the papers for the inside of the box were then adhered with Collage Medium.

I stamped and embossed a black piece of cardstock to create paper for the back and sides of the vignette box. I used the Skulls background stamp (CMS306) and Liquid Platinum Embossing powder.

 I cut the paper to fit the back and sides of the box and adhered it with Distress Collage Medium.

I adhered the Vignette Box to the Collage frame that had been covered. It was adhered with Distress Collage Medium and clamped together with Bulldog Clips until it was set.

I stamped the owl and moon from the Mr Bones Stamp Set onto a piece of scrap paper that I had in my scrap box. Then embossed it with clear embossing powder.

Then I added a couple of stars from the Falling Stars Layering Stencil, in the same way as I previously had done… and then embossed them.

Then I colored the owl and moon with a detail water brush and a variety of Distress Oxide Inks.

I began working on the bottles…

To give them a more spooky look, I decided to try a crackle technique I had discovered on Pinterest a while ago. This technique is SO COOL!! It was the first time I had ever done it, so when the crackle happened I was totally amazed!!

I took a couple of the Tim Holtz Corked Vials and a couple vintage bottles that I had in my stash, and painted them with Ranger Glue-N-Seal or Distress Collage Matte Medium, then set them aside to dry.

After they were dry, I applied a coat of Distress Crackle Paint-Crystal Rock Candy, with my finger, and set them aside to dry…

This is the result!!!! WOWZA!!!!! Crackle GOODNESS!!!!

Then I added some Distress Crayons and a bit of water into the cracks to get them to look like this…

Plus, I added some labels from the Halloween Ephemera pack that were distressed with a sanding grip and then various brown and black inks. Inside of my vials and jars… I added bits of glitter, old grungy vintage beads and a few of feathers.

Then next up was the ruler. I sanded the ruler to give it a worn look around the edges and added Walnut Stain Distress Ink on to it.

I brushed on a bit of Distress Collage Crazing and some Clear Rock Candy Crackle Paint and set it aside to dry and crackle.

When it was dry, I added some Black Soot Distress Crayon into the cracks to highlight them.

Then I began arranging the vignette. I rubbed Tarnished Brass into the Halloween Word Band, “Elixirs and Potions” and tied it to the gate with some thread. I added a couple leaves from the Sizzix Skeleton Leaves Set the had been sprayed with a variety of Distress Spray Stains. The ruler was the perfect spot for my little girl to sit.

I made a side trip to Goodwill to find something that my framed vignette box could sit on. To my surprise, I found a small vintage oil lamp that was missing the shade. This made the perfect stand! I removed the wick and with a hammer, tapped the center to make it flat for my box to sit upon. I rubbed a little Black Soot Distress Paint on the glass and voila, a vignette stand! I simply hot glued the frame to the lamp base.

I arranged all the parts and pieces for the front of the frame which included…the paper doll, a broom, a couple skulls to hang on the broom, a gate, a bit of Mummy Cloth, plus a bit of moss. It all was then adhered with collage medium. The jars were simply set within the frame. And with that, my vignette was complete.
